Jinjiang is located in the southeast part of Fujian along the sea, with its east adjacent to the Taiwan Strait, facing across Jinmen and Taiwan. It has a land area of 649 km2, and a sea area of 6345 km2, with a coastline of 110 km long. With a total population of 1.013 million persons, it is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, and the main ancestor land of Taiwan compatriots. With 2.20 million of compatriots living abroad as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan compatriots, it is recognized as 3 million Jinjiang persons at home and abroad. It has 15 towns, 1 farmland, and 385 administrative villages (dorps) under its jurisdiction. It is an experimental area of comprehensive reform in Fujian Province.
Jinjiang is of a long history. Of its scenic spots and historical sites, there are 95 protected historic sites at the city level or above. They include: Anping Bridge, a national historical relic that is recognized no bridge is longer than this Anping Bridge in China; Thatched Hut, an only one archeological Manicheism site in China and the world, that is protected the most completely; Longshan Temple, a 1000-year-old temple; as well as the Seabed Forest in Shenhu Bay, that is rarely seen in the world.
The urban area of Jinjiang has a built-up area of 12.8 km2, and an urban green coverage of 31.2%, with a per-capita public green area of 6.18 m2. A batch of high-level municipal facilities have been settled in succession, including the Power-dispatching Building, the Telecommunication Building, the Broadcasting & TV Building, and the Financial Area, etc. A batch of high-quality square green areas have been built among the urban area, including Jiangbin Park, Yangguang Square, Xindian Square, and Neigouhe Green Land, etc. A batch of high-standard functional communities have been established gradually, including the Sports Center, SM International Plaza, and Bamboo Community, etc.
Economic Strength
The Jinjiang Pattern, the development pattern of Jinjiang, is honored as one the four patterns for development of Chinese rural economy. Its economic development formation is mainly a layout and operational mechanism for co-development, composed of the market economy, export-oriented economy, and the joint stock system, in combination with various economic components.
The overall strength of Jinjiang is the first of the ten-top districts of Fujian Province. It has included in the list of the 100-top Counties (Cities) in National Overall Strength for 4 sessions. In 1999, its local financial income was the 13th in China. In 2000, its financial income was RMB 1.302 billion Yuan, and it was expected its gross domestic product (GDP) was RMB 27.948 billion Yuan. 
It has more than 10,000 enterprises of various kinds (including 52 enterprise groups, and 19 large and medium-sized township enterprises, mainly directed to textile and clothing, ceramics and building materials, shoe-making, plastic toys, and food and drinks, etc. The ratio of the three industries is 3.9:55.3:40.8. It has one well-known national trademark, 16 famous trademark in Fujian, and 53 provincial and ministerial excellent products.
In foreign economic trade, it has established long-term economic trade cooperation with more than 40 countries and districts, with products entering markets of Europe and America, Southeast Asia, Middle East, and South Africa. In 2000, the gross export value of social commodities is USD 1.61 billion dollars.
Infrastructure
It has built one 4D-level airport, and opened 23 domestic airlines, as well as interim chartered planes to Hong Kong and Manila. In 2000, the passenger throughput is 0.36 million persons, ranking among the top league of the 149 navigable airports in China.
It has three Class-II ports, i.e. Weitou, Shenhu, and Dongshi. It has built 10 quay berths at the 500~10000-ton level. Its water channels may travel to various big ports in China. It has also opened the international container marine line.
Fuxia Highway passes through its area. The traffic mileage of its urban highways is 979 km, with a density of up to 154.4 km/100 km2.
It has built a diesel power plant with an installed capacity of 70,000kw. The installed capacity of 110,000-volt transformers in the whole city is 976,000kw.
There are 17 water plants at the city- and town-levels, with a daily water-supply capacity of up to 195,000 tons. The South Jinjiang Segment of the urban 1,060,000-ton water supply and diversion project has been built well. The 200,000-ton water plant in the urban area has been completed.
Its modern information infrastructure has been built gradually, with 5 telecommunication networks, i.e. program-controlled telephone network, transmission network, N-ISDN (integrated narrow-band network), DDN (digital data network), and ATM network (asynchronous transfer mode broad-band network).
A batch of specialized and regional flagship markets, such as Chendi Shoe Material, Cizao Ceramics and Building Materials, Anhai Sugar-Cigar-Alcohol, Shedian Food, Fupu Vehicle and Electromachinery, and Huazhou Aquatic Product, have an annual trade volume of RMB 1-2 billion Yuan. The Jinjiang (International) Footwear Exposition as well as the National (Jinjiang) Trade Fair of Sugars, Alcohol, and Food, held annually, are of large scale and extensive impact, with specifications and quality increased year by year. Taking the leading industries as carrier, its regional market system has taken the preliminary shape, with strong radiation capacity.
A stretch of the development zone for foreign enterprises in Anping, East Hai¡¯an, Fupu, and Zimaoshan, etc., appears its overall efficiency day by day. The three emerging industrial parks at the city level, i.e. Wuli, Jinnan, and Anping, have been key growth points of regional economy, with advantageous qualifications and supporting functions, and with vast potential.
Social Undertakings
It has been honored with titles of the ¡°National Top-100 Scientific & Technological Counties (Cities)¡± and of the ¡°National Advanced County in Scientific & Technological Work¡±. It has built up a postdoctor working station (Postdoctor Working Station, High Scientific & Technological Park, Jinjiang, Fujian), which is the only one at the county-level in China, and one of the four ¡°Example Areas for Progression in Science & Technology¡± in China.
It has completely realized the required standard of the plan to make nine-year compulsory education universal and to eliminate illiteracy among the young and middle-aged in education. It has made the nine-year compulsory education universal. It has 52 vocational schools, junior & senior middle schools, and regular secondary schools. It has established Jinjiang College of Xiamen University. It has basically formed an education network, integrated with primary school, vocational school, adult education, and advanced education.
It has been honored with titles of the ¡°National Hometown of Wushu¡±, the ¡°National Advanced County (City) of Public Amateur Sports¡±, and the ¡°National Advanced City of Sports¡±, etc. Its ¡°Peasants¡¯ Basketball Team¡± has defended the title of the Champion of the National Rural Sports for three sessions in succession.
The city-, town-, and village-level basic cultural facilities have been established day by day. A batch of excellent programs, such as Jingkuixing and Longtouzha (Gaojia Opera), as well as Wuli Rainbow (a large-scale panto puppet show), have obtained awards in the National Theatre Exhibition for many times.
It has been honored with titles of the ¡°National Advanced City of Environmental Hygiene¡±, the ¡°City of Civilization in Fujian¡±, the ¡°National Advanced City in the Work of Establishing Village and Town of Civilization¡±, and the ¡°National Model City for Mutual Support between the Civilian and the Arm Forces¡±, etc.
